A while back Larry Hartke sent me a tune from David Pastorius' new
album "Sense of Urgency" to check out. Now, Larry has never sent me
anything to listen to so I figured this one might be interesting.
So, I sat down and programmed my mind to overlook the obvious kinship
to Jaco and just see how David stands on his own and I was very
pleasantly impressed!
Tight and precise musicianship are evident as David shows us that he
has his own voice. I got a feel of Jazz fused with rock and an
impressive display of slap from the very first track on. The key
element of interplay between drums and Bass are clearly pronounced on
every track and weave a solid lattice to support some very good music.
Very nice use of steel drums, piano, electric guitar acoustic guitar,
Hammond B-3, Vibes, Synth, Sax, and a vast assortment of upbeat
fascinating tempos kept my attention all the way through.
I can't begin to tell you how many CD's I have listened to where all
the songs are close to being the same. David managed to give us a
totally different experience with everything he laid down here. As I
went from track to track I enjoyed the fact that there was variety and
each song was very different from the previous one.
Since I am a huge Latin music fan, I was pleased to hear "Paredes" take
off in a very respectable direction with a little Santana like flavor.
Another favorite was Extra Ecclescam-Lacrimosa—a nice blend of the
flamenco approach with harmonious steel drums. Each track seemed to
hold its own.
I could go on, but it is better if you hear this CD for your self!
Even though I am a bass fanatic, this is a CD that has appeal for
everybody and I am looking forward to adding it to my iPod and
listening to it quite a few times.
